Candida albicans is a type of yeast. Typically, it’s harmless, but when an overgrowth of this type of yeast or other types of yeast occur in or on the body, it can cause trouble.
What Is Candida albicans
Candida is yeast, and candida albicans is the most common form of yeast. Typically, candidiasis, or a yeast infection, is caused by candida albicans. You can get a variety of different types of yeast infections. Some of the most common include thrush, which is a yeast infection in the mouth and/or throat, and vaginal yeast infections, which are yeast infections of the vagina. However, these are not the only types of yeast infections. You can get a yeast infection anywhere on your skin. Some diaper rashes are caused by yeast. You can also get yeast infections in your nail beds, your intestines, and in your blood stream.
How Do You Treat It?
Yeast infections caused by candida albicans are treated in a variety of different ways, and your doctor can help you determine which course of action is best for you. Typically, you will take antifungal medication of some kind. This might come in the form of a pill, a cream, a suppository, a mouthwash, etc. depending on the type of infection you have. It’s important to have your yeast infection diagnosed before you try over-the-counter remedies. Using an antifungal cream, for example, when it’s not needed can cause problems.
Can You Prevent It?
When it comes to preventing candida albicans, you will find that there are hundreds if not thousands of suggestions. Still, there are a number of easy things that you can do to help prevent yeast infections.
Keep it Dry – Yeast likes a warm, moist environment. By keeping your body as dry as possible, you limit the places that candida albicans can grow. Be sure to completely dry yourself after showering, bathing, and swimming. You should remove your swimsuit as soon as possible and change into dry clothes. Sitting around in a wet swimsuit for a prolonged period of time is a bad idea.
Staying dry also means wearing loose fitting clothing, especially during the summer. Women can benefit from wearing cotton underwear and avoiding tight jeans and thongs. Women also want to avoid putting soaps or lotions in the vagina, and they want to avoid douching. This also means that women should change tampons and pads frequently. Diapers should also be changed frequently, and the skin should be thoroughly dried to help prevent diaper rash in babies.
Be Aware of Antibiotics – Prolonged use of antibiotics can kill the bacteria that keeps yeast in check. If you are worried about your antibiotic use, you should consult your doctor.
Yogurt and Other Foods – Yogurt and other foods, like garlic, are thought to help keep the yeast in your system at a healthy level. Reducing sugars, especially processed sugars, is also thought to help prevent these types of infections.
Stay Healthy – If it all possible, stay healthy. People with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for developing yeast infections.
